Why We Make galleries
Location
V&A East Museum, Stratford, London
Date
2023–26
Project type
Permanent galleries within a new capital build
The newly built Why We Make galleries span two floors at V&A East Museum, bringing together more than 500 objects from the V&A’s collection. These free permanent galleries explore the most urgent questions in contemporary culture, revealing unexpected connections across time, geographies and creative disciplines.
I led and edited all interpretive text across the galleries. I developed a tone of voice and editorial approach grounded in V&A East’s belief in creativity as a force for change. The interpretation was designed to resonate with 16–24-year-olds in the surrounding boroughs – prioritising clarity, relevance and inclusivity while foregrounding the voices of artists and makers.
Editorial breakdown:
• Over 500 transhistorical objects grouped into 10 thematic sections
• More than 250 object labels, written for and with our target audience
• 25 films with artists and makers
• 24 large-scale quotes integrated into the gallery architecture
• 7 tactile experiences
• 5 interactive activities
• And countless hours admiring Molly Goddard's hot pink Daria dress
